Yes, you can pray each prayer on its own, but I hope it encourages and inspires you to pray your own prayers to God while you open up God’s word! If you would like more prayers, you can click here to see my first prayers to pray over Bible study. Each prayer is designed to help get you started with prayer. Below I have listed five (more) prayers to pray over Bible study. The Holy Spirit is promised to guide us and I think prayer is the perfect way to tap into hearing from the Spirit. How do we hear from God? We read His word! So as we prepare to hear from God, engage in Bible study, and learn to discover truth from Scripture we need to open up our hearts to God’s leading. Prayer is a way we can get our minds and hearts ready to hear from God. Not because He needs to be “reminded” of us or we need to get God’s attention, but because we need to draw our hearts toward Him. Prayer offers to us a way to open up the lines of communication to God. That is why I think praying over our Bible study is crucial. One of the things I’ve learned over the past ten years of doing Bible study is that prayer and Bible study must coincide. The difference? We have prayer and Bible study. Upside down and inside out, we are different. ![]() The life of a Christian is filled with things like this though. The emotional whiplash is hard on a soul, but isn’t this real life too? Joy and sorrow? Suffering and rejoicing? Hope in the midst of uncertainty. I see so much heartache and pain, but then I see the good, the beautiful, and praise God for His amazing provision. When we read about what is going on in the world I feel like my heart goes from worry to wonder. These are the days of upside down feelings. 5 (More) Prayers to Pray Over Bible Study

In Archaic Greece he was usually depicted as a mature man, bearded, and dressed as a traveler, herald, or shepherd. ![]() The image of Hermes evolved and varied along with Greek art and culture. Iconography Archaic bearded Hermes from a herm, early 5th century BC. In later myths, after the cult of Pan was reintroduced to Attica, Pan was said to be Hermes's son. Later, the epithet supplanted the original name itself and Hermes took over the role of psychopomp and as god of messengers, travelers, and boundaries, which had originally belonged to Pan, while Pan himself continued to be venerated by his original name in his more rustic aspect as the god of the wild in the relatively isolated mountainous region of Arcadia. A zero grade of the full PIE form-*ph 2usōn-yields the name of the Sanskrit psychopomp Pushan, who, like pan, is associated with goats. The PIE root * peh 2 "protect" also shows up in Latin pastor "shepherd" (whence the English pastoral). According to a theory that has received considerable scholarly acceptance, Hermes originated as a form of the god Pan, who has been identified as a reflex of the Proto-Indo-European pastoral god *Péh 2usōn, in his aspect as the god of boundary markers. It is also possible that since the beginning he has been a deity with shamanic attributes linked to divination, reconciliation, magic, sacrifices, and initiation and contact with other planes of existence, a role of mediator between the worlds of the visible and invisible. His cult was established in Greece in remote regions, likely making him originally a god of nature, farmers, and shepherds. The absorbing ("combining") of the attributes of Hermes to Thoth developed after the time of Homer amongst Greeks and Romans Herodotus was the first to identify the Greek god with the Egyptian ( Hermopolis) (Plutarch and Diodorus also did so), although Plato thought the gods were dissimilar (Friedlander 1992). Angelo (1997) thinks Hermes to be based on the Thoth archetype. Frothingham thought the god to have existed as a Mesopotamian snake-god, similar or identical to Ningishzida, a god who served as mediator between humans and the divine, especially Ishtar, and who was depicted in art as a Caduceus. It is likely that Hermes is a pre-Hellenic god, though the exact origins of his worship, and its original nature, remain unclear. Other scholars have suggested that Hermes may be a cognate of the Vedic Sarama. Scholarly speculation that "Hermes" derives from a more primitive form meaning "one cairn" is disputed. However, the stone etymology is also linked to Indo-European *ser- ("to bind, put together"). Beekes rejects the connection with herma and suggests a Pre-Greek origin. The etymology of ἕρμα itself is unknown, but is probably not a Proto-Indo-European word. ![]() Most scholars derive "Hermes" from Greek ἕρμα ( herma), "stone heap." The earliest form of the name Hermes is the Mycenaean Greek * hermāhās, written □□□ e-ma-a 2 ( e-ma-ha) in the Linear B syllabic script. In Roman mythology and religion many of Hermes' characteristics belong to Mercury, a name derived from the Latin merx, meaning "merchandise," and the origin of the words " merchant" and "com merce." However, his main symbol is the caduceus, a winged staff intertwined with two snakes copulating and carvings of the other gods. Hermes' attributes and symbols include the herma, the rooster, the tortoise, satchel or pouch, talaria (winged sandals), and winged helmet or simple petasos, as well as the palm tree, goat, the number four, several kinds of fish, and incense. He is regarded as "the divine trickster", about which the Homeric Hymn to Hermes offers the most well-known account. In myth, Hermes functions as the emissary and messenger of the gods, and is often presented as the son of Zeus and Maia, the Pleiad. Hermes plays the role of the psychopomp or "soul guide"-a conductor of souls into the afterlife. He is able to move quickly and freely between the worlds of the mortal and the divine aided by his winged sandals. He is also considered the protector of human heralds, travelers, thieves, merchants, and orators. Hermes ( / ˈ h ɜːr m iː z/ Greek: Ἑρμῆς) is an Olympian deity in ancient Greek religion and mythology considered the herald of the gods. ![]() ![]() Most widely-supported methods across digimode software packages-withoutĮxternal interface hardware. ![]() Element 85, now named astatine, was produced successfully in 1940 by Dale R. An attempt at discovering element 85 in 1939 by Horia Hulubei and Yvette Cauchois via spectroscopy was also unsuccessful, as was an attempt in the same year by Walter Minder, who discovered an iodine-like element resulting from beta decay of polonium. In 1937, Rajendralal De claimed to have discovered element 85 in minerals, and called the element dakine, but he was also mistaken. In 1931, Fred Allison claimed to have discovered element 85 with a magneto-optical machine, and named the element Alabamine, but was mistaken. Iodine was proven to be a new element by Joseph Gay-Lussac. Suspecting that these crystals were a new element, Courtois sent samples to other chemists for investigation. However, in 1811, Courtois added sulfuric acid to his process and found that his process produced purple fumes that condensed into black crystals. Courtois typically boiled the seaweed ash with water to generate potassium chloride. Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois, who was using seaweed ash as part of a process for saltpeter manufacture. He originally proposed the name muride for the new element, but the French Academy changed the element's name to bromine. Balard discovered bromine by passing chlorine gas through a sample of brine. īromine was discovered in the 1820s by Antoine Jérôme Balard. The gas would burn human tissue externally and internally, especially the lungs, making breathing difficult or impossible depending on the level of contamination. It displaced oxygen in contaminated areas and replaced common oxygenated air with the toxic chlorine gas. Chlorine gas was used as a poisonous gas during World War I. In 1807, Humphry Davy investigated chlorine and discovered that it is an actual element. Scheele called the element "dephlogisticated muriatic acid", which is how chlorine was known for 33 years. However, elemental chlorine was not produced until 1774, when Carl Wilhelm Scheele heated hydrochloric acid with manganese dioxide. Hydrochloric acid was known to alchemists and early chemists. In 1886, Henri Moissan, a chemist in Paris, performed electrolysis on potassium bifluoride dissolved in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, and successfully isolated fluorine. In 1860, George Gore, an English chemist, ran a current of electricity through hydrofluoric acid and probably produced fluorine, but he was unable to prove his results at the time. Early chemists realized that fluorine compounds contain an undiscovered element, but were unable to isolate it. The fluorine mineral fluorospar was known as early as 1529. Organobromides are the most important class of flame retardants, while elemental halogens are dangerous and can be toxic. The middle halogens-chlorine, bromine, and iodine-are often used as disinfectants. Most halogens are typically produced from minerals or salts. All of the halogens form acids when bonded to hydrogen. The group of halogens is the only periodic table group that contains elements in three of the main states of matter at standard temperature and pressure, though not far above room temperature the same becomes true of groups (I) and 15, assuming white phosphorus is taken as the standard state. When halogens react with metals, they produce a wide range of salts, including calcium fluoride, sodium chloride (common table salt), silver bromide and potassium iodide. The word "halogen" means "salt former" or "salt maker". In the modern IUPAC nomenclature, this group is known as group (XVII) or group (VII). The halogens ( / ˈ h æ l ə dʒ ə n, ˈ h eɪ-, - l oʊ-, - ˌ dʒ ɛ n/ ) are a group in the periodic table consisting of six chemically related elements: fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), astatine (At), and tennessine (Ts), though some authors would exclude tennessine as its chemistry is unknown and is theoretically expected to be more like that of gallium. It was funny then - criticism rolls off an umpire’s back like water off a duck’s - but what Davidson couldn’t have known at the time was how essential a destination that small website would become to him. In the grand scheme of things, CloseCallSports’ readership is tiny, its 10,000 daily pageviews a mere drop in the vast ocean of the baseball internet. Many are amateur umps who, contrary to the common refrain, do watch Major League Baseball games for the umpires. Some are former MLB umps like Davidson, who began commenting regularly on the site after retiring in 2016. (If Davidson’s name is familiar, it might be because he famously ejected Expos mascot Youppi! from a 1989 game in Montreal for the offense of banging on the top of the visiting dugout.) And a small, silent cohort is made up of just about every working ump in the major leagues. “Most of the guys who are working read the website every day,” Davidson says. They come because CloseCallSports is something of an oasis in an online desert that is either hostile or simply indifferent to the art of officiating baseball games. Umps, both amateur and professional, are used to turning on a game and hearing broadcasters groan over a borderline call. They are accustomed to opening Twitter to seeing screenshots of the K-zone proliferate like they are handed down from on high. They are inured to having any mistake, no matter how small and how infrequent, trumpeted as proof of their bias and ineptitude.īut CloseCallSports offers a refreshing change of perspective, despite Davidson’s first encounter with the comment section. Here, umpires are not easy scapegoats used to explain a favorite team’s misfortunes but are instead professionals whose performance is worthy of deep, detailed study. Rather than preach the gospel of the K-zone, seen on every broadcast and featured in MLB’s AtBat App, CloseCallSports instead points out its many flaws. When an ejection is made and fans cry “Ump Show!” CloseCallSports digs into the rulebook to determine whether the precipitating call was, in fact, correct. Often, the site finds, it was.ĬloseCallSports has so ingrained itself into the world of umpiring that it often publishes crew assignments before they are officially released, a practice so concerning to MLB that, according to former umpire Dale Scott, the league once warned its umpires they would be “severely fined” if caught passing information to the site. That kind of attention from the powers that be is quite the stamp of legitimacy for a small site that was started a decade ago by a hockey organist whose officiating role model is Winnie the Pooh. The scene was a middle school game of ultimate frisbee between students and faculty. But it was destined to be an ultimate sham unless there was a key change made to the officiating. “I noticed that they had appointed a staff member to officiate that contest with no student representative, and I felt that quite unfair,” says Imber, now 32. “That was my first assignment, I suppose.”ĬloseCallSports’ is Imber’s brainchild and side project, one into which he pours hours and hours of his time purely out of passion. With him, it always comes back to baseball and umpiring. He has multiple day jobs, but the most notable is that he is the game day organist for the Anaheim Ducks. Even that gig links back to America’s Pastime. A classically trained pianist, he taught himself to play the organ during a previous job with the Dodgers. After he clocked out, desperate to avoid driving home from downtown Los Angeles during rush hour, he’d fiddle around on the Dodger Stadium organ. His foray into the baseball internet began even before that gig. In 2007, Imber created one of the oddest fantasy leagues out there. If the concept for the Umpire Ejection Fantasy League seems out of left field, then it’s fitting that it first started at a site Imber began called The Left Field Corner. |
